Watching Dr. Chris: Pet Vet, (a remarkably good looking blonde Houdini of a vet), with my 9-year old daughter Bella. As you can imagine, Dr. Chris saves animals — cats, birds, dogs, et al.
When the show went to a commercial my daughter said, “Oh, I love this commercial.” It was a take off of MC Hammer’s song and video, “You Can’t Touch This.” Hammer’s 1990 song was a HUGE hit. Massive in many ways. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing or seeing the video. Even the dance moves. Australia, Japan, London, New York –even bootlegged in China.
My daughter thought the commercial for Eggo waffles where the kid dances and says to the mom, “Can’t touch this” while MC Hammer’s song plays in the background was funny because she loved the saying and song and because it was new! Well, it was new to her. But, as a parent and seeing something lifted from the past, I felt the urge (and, yes, I turned into my parents) to jump on YouTube and educate my daughter where whence it came.
So, we get on the computer, search YouTube and there it is. I fire it up and Bella watches it. Halfway through, she’s like, “LOOK at his pants!”.
I say, “What about them?” thinking she’s going to make fun of them.
“Now I know where they got them on A.N.T Farm”, she said. A.N.T Farm is a Disney Channel show.
Ah, now it all makes. What’s old is new again. Who woulda thunk it, Disney and Hammer coming together on my couch. Still laugh at the shot of Hammer in his unique tank top. As I write this, my daughter is trying to do the dance. No 1D, One Direction in sight. Nope, it’s Bella Time!
